Top Tips On Maintaining Invisalign Alignment Trays

Invisalign is a great option for correcting your smile. Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign is much faster and much more comfortable. In addition, Invisalign alignment trays or “aligners” are made of a thin, transparent plastic that’s nearly invisible. This means that nobody needs to know that you’re in the middle of orthodontic treatment.

If you want to make the most out of your Invisalign experience, the team at Mendota Springs Dentistry put together some of our best tips for caring for your aligners:

1. Take Your Aligners Out to Eat and Drink

Some patients find this to be inconvenient, but you should never drink anything besides water while wearing your aligners. This is because drinking and eating while wearing Invisalign can stain your aligners, and some foods can even bend, warp, or completely damage them. The same is true of hot foods and beverages.

2. Keep Aligners In Their Case When You’re Not Wearing Them

You’ll want to remove your aligners when eating and drinking, so you’ll need to make sure you have somewhere to put them. Dr. Zhang or Dr. Jacoby will give you a pair of cases to use for this exact purpose. If you don’t protect your aligners in the case, you could end up bending or damaging them. You also risk misplacing them and losing a set of aligners, which can delay your treatment significantly. Consistently keeping your aligners safe in their case is the best way to make sure they’re not damaged or misplaced.

3. Clean Your Aligners Properly

You should rinse your aligners with warm water whenever you take them out, including every time you eat or drink. This will help reduce bacterial buildup. In addition, any time you brush your teeth, your aligners should also be cleaned. However, don’t just brush your Invisalign trays with toothpaste. Using toothpaste and a brush can scratch your aligners. Use a gentle antibacterial soap that rinses away cleanly, and warm (never hot!) water, since hot water can warp and damage your aligners.
